Overview/Annotation:
Students will research the red fox using an online encyclopedia from the Alabama Virtual Library web site and answer questions provided by the teacher. This is a good lesson for students' first experience in using the AVL.

Computers with Internet access(be sure students have signed Internet permission forms on file)
Background/Preparation:
Students should have prior experience typing in URLs, or the teacher should bookmark the AVL site.
Procedures/Activities:
1.)Show students how to open Internet Explorer and type in the Alabama Virtual Library URL in the address bar (or show them how to navigate the "Favorites" menu if teacher has bookmarked the site in advance).

The Alabama Virtual Library is an online information resource that includes magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and more.

2.)Have students click on the "Campus and Library" button.

3.)Under "Age Group" have students select Elementary School.

4.)On the resulting "Elementary School Resources" page, have students select "Encyclopedia of Animals."

5.)Have students type "red fox" in the search bar and click the "Search" button.

6.)Have students click on the words, "HTML full article," OR "red fox." (If needed, remind them that they can tell which words to click to take them to the article by moving the mouse until the cursor changes from an "arrow" to a "pointing finger."

7.)Instruct students to read the article, look at the picture, and then answer the questions on the handout.

8.)In conclusion, ask several students to share one thing they have learned about the red fox and to explain how the behavior or characteristic helps the red fox to survive.
